Free Student Matinees Application

Fall 2023 Application

The Old Globe's Department of Arts Engagement is pleased to offer seven (7) free student matinee opportunities for Fall 2023, and all schools and accredited homeschooling programs are eligible to receive an award. To apply, this form must be filled out completely and submitted by 11:59 PM on August 6, 2023.

We will continue accepting applications after this date, but those submitted by the deadline will be given priority consideration. Awards will be announced by August 11.

Please read the following instructions carefully:

  • Limit one application per school for up to 80 tickets. Please work with your principal and fellow teachers to combine requests.
  • Schools must not exceed a ratio of one adult per 10 students. Adults serving as 1:1 aides for their respective students will not count against this ratio.
  • Awards come with a mandatory pre-show workshop. Failure to meet this requirement will result in forfeiture of your award and may affect your school's future program eligibility.
  • Request an accurate number of tickets. A large percentage of unused tickets may affect your future program eligibility, but also hurt the chances of other deserving schools.
  • All schools are required to arrive at the theatre no later than 9:30 AM for a 10:15 AM load-in, and a 10:30 AM curtain.
With the ever-evolving pandemic, these dates are subject to changes and cancellations pending school district announcements, CDC recommendations, and Old Globe-adopted protocols. Please read our COVID policy to ensure you're prepared for your trip upon arrival.

  • Content warnings, if applicable, will be shared to awardees when available to The Old Globe and could change closer to the date of your trip.

Our program provides the opportunity for students to experience theatrical performances of the highest professional standards. No changes are made to the productions for the sake of young audiences. Teachers and administrators should be conscious of shows with strong language and adult themes. They should plan post-show discussions and activities to help students put these elements into context and to include the theatrical experience in the larger learning environment. Our pre-show workshops will help teachers in this regard.

Cabaret

An Asolo Repertory Theatre Production
Book by Joe Masteroff
Based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood
Music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb
Directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome to Cabaret! It’s 1931 Berlin, and inside the Kit Kat Klub, British nightclub singer Sally Bowles keeps the delirious party raging. But no amount of booze, music, and dancing can slow the ominous march of a changing Germany as it draws ever closer. Featuring an iconic score from Kander and Ebb—including “Maybe This Time,” “Mein Herr,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” and, of course, the title song—this Tony Award–winning musical is reimagined in a visionary new staging by Globe favorite Josh Rhodes (Guys and Dolls, Bright Star). BroadwayWorld calls this production, “Hands down the most cohesive, well-rounded, fully conceptualized staging of this musical that I have seen to date. My friends, this is how you do Cabaret.”

Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Book and lyrics by Timothy Mason

Original production conceived and directed by Jack O'Brien
Original choreography by John DeLuca
Directed by James Vásquez
Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage
Old Globe Theatre
Conrad Prebys Theatre Center

Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a wonderful, whimsical musical based upon the classic Dr. Seuss book. Max the dog narrates, as the mean and scheming Grinch decides to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos, leading The Grinch to discover there is more to Christmas than he bargained for. San Diego audiences will experience the magic of this annual theatrical event as the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, will once again transform into the snow-covered Whoville, right down to the last can of Who-hash. Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas! features the classic holiday songs "Santa for a Day," "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," and "Welcome, Christmas (Fah Who Doraze)."
